    Role Summary

    From the moment they first appeared in 1925, the Rockettes have been American icons. They are the longest running precision dance company in America, and the world’s premier precision dance company. It is time to establish the long-term artistic vision for our beloved Rockettes. This position is a company first.

    The Artistic Director will be the primary creative voice in establishing the current and future artistic vision of the Rockettes and ensuring the highest level of excellence in all programs and performances, within the parameters of business objectives. They will be entrusted to protect and honor the deep legacy of the Rockettes, while broadening the brand, the precision dance repertoire, its global exposure and re-ignite its powerful place in the dance world all year long.

    The Artistic Director will be responsible for conceiving, developing, establishing and implementing the artistic vision and focus of the Rockettes as a dance company, for both short and long term. Working with the Productions Leadership team they will successfully execute the company’s artistic production, programming, and outreach activities. In collaboration with the Leadership team the Artistic Director will also participate in major decisions about the ongoing development and delivery of the Rockettes mission, in line with MSG values and activities, with input from Rockettes staff and MSG stakeholders. The Artistic Director will have significant responsibility in developing an all female-identifying troop that is diverse and inclusive.


    Specific Functions/Activities Summary

    • Develop the short and long-term artistic vision for the Rockettes
    • Oversee the vision, planning, and implementation of educational and community outreach strategies
    • Hire, supervise and evaluate artistic personnel including directors, performers, designers, and stage managers
    • Develop talent pipeline to broaden the diversity and inclusion of the Rockettes
    • Design and evaluate programs for the year, including workshops, master classes and conservatories
    • Foster partnerships and collaborations in the larger artistic community that fulfill the company mission
    • With business partners, develop annual program budget, and provide input into marketing and PR.
    • Act as a spokesperson for the organization's artistic purpose via speaking engagements, public and social appearances, and, as requested, at fundraising events and solicitations
    • Foster the development of good relations with other cultural organizations by participating in meetings and joint activities where appropriate

    Qualifications

    • An accomplished and strong producer who extensively knows the dance community, both nationally and internationally
    • Strong management and leadership skills
    • A passion for and understanding of precision dance and the Rockettes
    • Minimum 7 years professional dance performance experience including a highly skilled choreographer, teacher and coach
    • Prior creative direction or artistic direction experience at an institution is a plusA proven ability to maintain high artistic standards and work collaboratively with other artists and administrators
    • An understanding of professional company operations including show planning, financial, marketing and PR issues and management in a matrixed organization
    • Exemplary work ethic, alignment with MSG values and the ability to work quickly and under pressure
    • Ability to multitask and prioritize as new situations and initiatives arise on short notice
    • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills with the ability to negotiate and influence, while exercising sensitivity to the audience

    Education

    Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
