    Role Summary

    The VP, Public Relations, NY Knicks will be the lead communicator for the NY Knicks, and will be responsible for supporting and facilitating extensive, proactive publicity efforts for the team, including increasing awareness of the team and its assets in non-traditional sports media outlets as well as through media who routinely cover the team. This position serves as chief team spokesperson, manages all interaction with an extensive array of local and national print and broadcast media, and oversees a broad range of media management areas. The VP will partner with the SVP Public Relations on crises management and issues affecting the franchise, developing pertinent materials and strategies to minimize issues and protect assets.

    The VP will also lead efforts in management of all aspects of the media relations process to protect the franchise, overseeing annual media training to prepare and support team players, coaches and management, ensuring media policies are implemented across the organization, overseeing all media game and technical requirements and facilitating the needs of MSG Networks and national television rights carriers.

    Specific Functions/Activities Summary

    • Actively develop and execute high-impact, creative and strategic communication programs focused on key sports business initiatives, marketing and sales efforts, and targeted lifestyle/entertainment press opportunities.
    • With guidance from SVP Public Relations, develop comprehensive annual Public Relations plan for the team, incorporating traditional and social media strategies that celebrate team history and embraces current team.
    • Manage all media interaction and present clear and consistent messaging that reinforces and protects the Knicks, it’s players and assets, as well as the company.
    • Develop strategy and tactics to proactively manage public issues relating to players or franchise
    • Create pertinent, educational and informative media training sessions for all management, coaches and players including an emphasis on social media. This includes personalized preparation for team management and coaching staff prior to each media availability to ensure they stay on point with the organization’s message, limiting mistakes.
    • Create and disseminate clear and concise media reports to upper management.
    • Work closely with organization’s publicity team to work on PR plan to publicize the team.
    • Oversee the team responsible for managing media operations for the season, including part time game day media staff, creation of and operations of media related Knicks publications and guides, daily clip reporting and media monitoring.


    • 15+ years leading public relation and communication efforts for a professional sports team and/or high-profile brands, including traditional and social media experience and crisis management
    • Leadership role in the development and communication of public relations plans, that incorporate strategies for crises/issues.
    • Experience in leading and managing professional sports players in a diverse array of scenarios and events.
    • Experience in a fast-paced environment, servicing diverse groups, shifting priorities, multi-faceted projects.
    • Extensive experience within the professional sports industry regarding rules, requirements and policies (NBA specific knowledge is).
    • Credibility and close relationships with media contacts, players, management and coaching staff.
    • Unflappable and calming demeanor that can instill confidence and garner respect from senior executives, coaching staff and athletes on all media issues, and which garners
    • Team player who can inspire staff daily – with both short- and long-term goals
    • Exhibits strong commitment to developing a highly functioning and successful PR team and is effective in communicating organizational goals and priorities.
    • Passion for professional sports and athletics, understanding of the “in season” schedule of team and time commitment of the professional sports world.

    **Travel required to (but not limited to) the following - All team home and road game, NBA lottery, NBA draft, NBA summer league, etc




    Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
