Responsibilities

  • This role is primarily responsible for the accounting operations of MSG’s professional sports teams including: 
  • Preparation and recording of required journal entries
  • Review and approval of invoices and other expenses for payment
  • Management and facilitation of the monthly, quarterly and annual financial close processes
  • Monitoring of financial results to facilitate financial analysis
  • Effective operation and monitoring of the Company’s Internal Control Over Financial Reporting with respect to MSG’s Teams
  • Facilitation of the external audit process
  • This role will also assume certain responsibilities with respect to providing technical accounting research regarding proposed mergers and acquisitions (M&A) as well as other special projects as needed.  Further detail with respect to the duties / functions of this role are detailed below.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                       MSG Sports                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Preparation, review and posting of journal entries
  • Review and approval of invoices and expense reports for payment and coding
  • Perform research and provide support for MSG’s technical accounting analysis with respect to significant transactions impacting MSG Sports
  • Completion of analyses required in support of required league reporting for the various professional sports leagues in which the Company is a member
  • Responsible for MSG month end close activities with respect to MSG Sports departments including but not limited to:
    • Monthly review of general ledger posting activity for payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and procurement and determination of the need for monthly accruals based upon this review
    • Preparation of balance sheet reconciliations
    • Preparation of income statement variance analyses
    • Preparation of balance sheet and income statement account analyses, as well as the allocation to the Sports divisions.
    • Preparation of the MSG Sports Monthly Divisional Controllers Letter reporting package including variances to budget and forecast.
  • Assistance with explanations for significant variances against the annual budget, forecasts or Outlooks
  • Assist with completion of MSG Sports related SEC reporting schedules for public reporting and financial statement disclosures.
  • Responsible for the operation and supporting documentation related to the Company’s Internal Control Over Financial reporting as well as the facilitation of MSG Internal Audit’s quarterly Testing
  • Support KPMG external audit efforts                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  M&A Research                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      From time to time, MSG engages in special projects, primarily focused around business development and other growth initiatives.  These projects can be focused around MSG Sports or MSG Entertainment, as well as a mix of both or other initiatives all together.  With respect to these projects, the Manager Accounting – Teams & Special Projects is expected to support the Company’s accounting related efforts as determined by the VP Technical Accounting & Controller – Marketing Partnerships, Suites / Ticketing and Teams.  Such efforts include but are not limited to the following:
  • Review of transaction documents to identify potential accounting issues
  • Technical accounting research and documentation surrounding the proposed transaction
  • Assistance with the performance of diligence surrounding the proposed transaction, including at times, the development of related financial models
  • Assistance with the preparation of MSG’s final Technical Accounting workpapers surrounding the transaction, including the matters considered, judgements made and conclusions reached
  • Assistance with the development of required journal entries
  • Assistance with the drafting of required financial statement disclosures within the Company’s SEC Filings

Technical/Functional Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP
  • Ability to think “outside of the box” and demonstrate superior problem solving and analytical skills
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Experience in the accounting for the following areas preferred:
    • Revenue recognition, including deferred revenue, specifically as it relates to arrangements with multiple deliverables
    • Valuation of assets / business for both business combinations and annual or periodic impairment analyses
    • Leases
  • Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office Tools
  • Experience with systems currently utilized by MSG, i.e. Oracle, TM1, Coupa, PeopleSoft, preferred

 

Key Experiences/Achievements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
  • CPA License preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Public / private background preferred
  • Must have experience working with SEC clients (if coming from public accounting) or at an SEC Registered Company (if coming from private)

Education

Candidates who have completed 60 credits of college-level coursework (representing 2 years), or have shown similar self-development through certifications, trade school coursework, etc. are preferred.
